On the 10th of May, 750 Cub Scouts and 200 Leaders from 32 different Scout Groups gathered at Kennedy Grove to “Explore the Jungle”. This year’s National Cub event aimed to soft launch the new cub programme, still based on The Jungle Book but adapted for the upcoming generation. The event started with the flagbreak, followed by “Ġewwa l-Ġungla” written by Mr Sean Bartolo specifically for this event to bring out all the attendees’ scouting spirit!
This event has been in the works since October, with Mr Steven Sultana and Ms Sarah Galea expressing the meticulous planning that went into corresponding the theme of the event, as well as the activities, which were specifically designed to correspond to the new programme.
The Cubs were divided into 8 groups, each group named after a different character in The Jungle Book. In total, there were 4 main sections:
- Treetops: Included a tracking signs hike and Knotting
- My cave: Fitness and Learning how to put up hike tents
- Council Rock: Building trust through a blindfolded game and Card-making
- My River: Recycling and Nature Hunt
Each group had the opportunity to partake in each station, with the laughter and yelling of excited cubs being the most satisfying reward to the helpers involved.
Janice had the opportunity to explore the jungle herself and asked our cubs how they felt about their day!
Mr Anton Pisani, the Chief Commissioner, noted his satisfaction in the outcome of all the planning team’s hard work. Furthermore, he highlighted the sense of unity between the different scout groups. However, and most importantly, it is nice to see cubs enjoy themselves!
At the end of the event, the cubs were awarded a commemorative badge as well as a compass to explore the jungle safely! And each scout group that attended was given a glass replica of the new badges!
We look forward to seeing our cubs exploring the new programme first-hand! A special thanks goes to the planning team: Mr Sean Bartolo, Mr Steven Sultana, Ms Paula Mifsud and Ms Sarah Galea for their dedication to organise such a successful event!
